Dear Literacy Friends,

Since the legislature did not provide an opportunity for revising the TEKS, a new version of the ELA/R
TEKS alignment has been prepared. The major change is placement of the comprehension standards after
the vocabulary strand instead of the prior placement at the end of the TEKS in Figure 19. The first page
now shows this adjustment to the structure of the TEKS. Both documents are in Word: one has yellow
highlights to correspond with the analysis document and the other alignment document is without highlights.
Because of this structural improvement, all rows are renumbered in the alignment and analysis document.

College and Career Readiness Standards Aligned to ELAR TEKSOne voice can change a mind; a
collection of voices can change the world.  The coalition of ELA professionals would like to thank
the collective voices of Texas educators who testified before the SBOE February 13, 2008.

Melanie Smith, NHCCTE board member explains,

“I wish every teacher in the state knew how lucky they were to have voices like yours standing up for
them while they were back "at home" in their classrooms teaching away, oblivious to the near tragedy that
took place in Austin.”

The tragedy Melanie refers to is still in the works.

Note the message below from SBOE member, Mary Helen Berlanga.

“Now, we must continue to be vigilant. The members that were promoting
Donna Garner's alternative document and that was a part of the substitute motion introduced by the
Chairman of the Board, Don McLeroy, are planning their next move.  A subcommittee was selected by the
Chair, so we must watch what they do.  I am sure of one thing. They will not rest until they have the
contents of the alternative document well-entrenched into the body of the work that the English teachers of
Texas have been carefully and meticulously developing for the past two years.”

Our collective voices must continue to communicate with SBOE members across the state that we support
the Standards Work document (with requested revisions).  We do not support the inclusion of language
from Donna Garner’s alternative document.  This document was not part of the TEA/SBOE process.

Most testimonies from February 13, 2008 are linked below.  Feel free to read their words, their voices,
their defense and testimony for an ELA curriculum that meets the needs of Texas students for now and for
the future.

We would then invite ELA professionals to remain vigilant.  Please commit to one or more of the following:
