President’s Message
By Janet Charpiot, President
It is time for us to join the future and support all forms of 21st century literacies, inside and outside of school. As we delve into the
exciting ways of using Web2.0, Wikis, Diigos, Glogster, Voice Thread, and Podcasting, we can’t stand idle or the educational world will
pass us by. In fact, we have moved from a sequential model of literacy development to everything coming all at once in print, digitally,
and through networking. So just like our students being able to let their voices be heard through our ever-changing technological world,
we must also join the exciting communication revolution.

So…this is a call to action! We, as CREST members, are all aware of our challenges for the past few years in voicing our knowledge and
expertise to the State Board of Education as they made critical decisions that affected both our profession and our students’ literacy
development.  It is time to let our voice be heard through all different modes of communication. The following candidates (below) are
running in the primary election on March 2, 2010. It is time to spread the word on who will have an educator’s voice for all children and
a common vision. Everyone in our organization has an opportunity to spread the word regarding the upcoming primary across our own
specific areas of influence. We aren’t just talking educators, but your neighbors, family, friends, and even social/spiritual groups. We
must have more informed Texans voting to create a State Board of Education that listens to the talented educators of Texas.

As stated above please make a difference by following the steps below:

1. Become informed (Find your SBOE representative at http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us)

2. Make a decision about the candidate you choose to support

3. Share your findings about your chosen candidate with others

4. Vote. Encourage others to vote. Actively campaign for your candidate. See the chart below and inform friends and relatives that live in
other districts to do the same.
